ACS 2025: Surgical Progress Unveiled
Chicago once again hosted one of the world’s premier surgical gatherings: the American College of Surgeons Clinical Congress 2025. Surgeons, educators, researchers, and leaders from around the globe spent a week exploring innovation, celebrating achievements, and sharing knowledge across specialties.
The Congress welcomed prominent international figures, including Dr. Leo-Paul Powell of Jamaica, pediatric leader Dr. Tracia Powell, and Dr. Wesley Francis from The Bahamas. Their contributions highlighted the global reach and impact of the ACS community.
A defining moment of the week was the installation of Dr. Anton N. Sidawy as the 106th President of the American College of Surgeons. A vascular surgeon and educator with a career spanning decades, Dr. Sidawy brings experience as editor of major journals, author of multiple editions of Rutherford’s Vascular Surgery, and leader of the ACS Vascular Verification Program. Joining him in leadership are Dr. Anne C. Mosenthal as First Vice-President and Dr. Edward Barksdale Jr. as Second Vice-President.
Adding a fun twist to the week, the Repocalypse ACS 2025 Tournament crowned Dr. Alvaro Ducas as champion, with Dr. Hasan Buyukdogan taking second place. The friendly competition celebrated surgical skill and camaraderie.
Technology took center stage at ACS 2025, with a spotlight on the rapid rise of AI and robotics in surgery. Surgeons explored how machine learning, large language models, and computer vision are transforming education, planning, and practice. Sessions ranged from beginner-friendly AI introductions to debates on ethics and clinical decision-making, while robotic surgery workshops addressed credentialing, integrated specialty applications, and hands-on skill building.
The Congress also honored 103 surgeons inducted into the ACS Academy of Master Surgeon Educators®, representing 13 specialties and nine countries. These leaders exemplify lifelong dedication to surgical education, mentorship, and improving patient outcomes through innovative training.
“Induction into the Academy is more than an honor—it’s a call to action,” said Dr. L.D. Britt, Co-Chair of the Academy.
From interactive workshops to high-impact keynotes, ACS 2025 energized attendees with new tools, knowledge, and global collaborations. The Congress reinforced a shared commitment to advancing surgical care and building partnerships that span continents.
